Assassins Creed

REVIEW

The game follows Desmond Miles, a bartender who is kidnapped by a mega-company called Abstergo Industries, who put Desmond into a machine they call the "Animus". Using the Animus, Desmond can relive his ancestors memories as they happened. But, why Abstergo wants Desmonds ancestors memories is a mystery and remains a mystery until about 3/4s into the game.

In the Animus, Desmond relives the memories of his ancestor Altair Ibn-La Ahad. Altair is an assassin in the Middle Ages (1191) during the 3rd Crusade, in the Holy Land (Syria and Jordan). Altair and 2 fellow assassins are sent to Jerusalem to enter Solomons Temple, the headquarters of the Templars in the Holy Land. They are sent there to retrieve an artifact from Templar hands, and to assassinate the Templar leader, Robert De'Sable. But, in the process Altair disobeys the Creed by breaking all 3 Assassin Tenets: Killing an Innocent, moving with haste and revealing himself, and compromising the brotherhood. Now, Altair is assigned by the assassin Mentor Al Mualim to Assassinate 9 men to redeem his honor. 9 men who are all connected. How are they connected? Why does Al Mualim want these men dead? That is only one mystery among many in
Assassins creed.

The gameplay is really fun, probably the most noticeably original gameplay aspect is that you can climb different structures, specifically buildings. No, you are not a guy with the abilities of Spider-man, you must grab on to different ledges and hand holds to climb up a building, and from there you can run across rooftops and leap from building to building. A very original feature.

The combat is quite fun, if a bit clunky. You have a sword, short blade, throwing knives, and a hidden blade. You use your hidden blade for assassinations. When in open conflict, you must use a sword or Short blade. In combat, you can perform 2 key moves: Offensive, and Defensive/Counter. Offensive attacks are generally weak, and some enemies cannot be killed by offensive attacks, also, performing an offensive attack leaves you vulnerable to being countered by your enemies. Defensive (mostly referred to as "Counter Attack") is you most affective combat move, you wait for your enemies to attack, once their sword is about to hit you, you press the attack button to counter, and then an animation will play out. The combat is bloody, and sometimes brutal.

For each Assassination target, you must perform investigations, the investigation types are: Pickpocket, Interrogation, Informant, and Eavesdrop. Each of these reveal information about your target, so you will know how and when to strike. To reveal where these investigations are, you must climb a viewpoint, and then synchronize it.

Viewpoints are tall points on the map, that you must climb and then synchronize with, doing so will make the map more clear, and reveal hidden objectives, such as investigations.

Other objectives are available to, such as Save Citizen challenges, where you must save a citizen being harassed by the city guard. Also, there is a challenge where you can kill all the Templar soldiers in the Holy Land. There are 60 in total, and killing all 60 will get you the "Personal Vendetta" achievement or trophy.

Lastly, there are 3 main cities in the game: Damascus, Acre, and Jerusalem. There is also the assassins headquarters of Masayaf, which is a castle fortress, with a small village beneath it. Finally, there is an area between each of the cities called the "Kingdom". It is a mostly pointless space full of scattered villages that makes travel between cities a pain.

The Verdict

Assassins Creed is without a doubt an instant classic, even if there are a lot of faults, but the bad is mostly outdone by the good, and is an impressive game, despite a disappointing ending.

The Good:
- Cool Graphics
- Cities are varied and unique
- Fun Gameplay
- Original Story

The Bad:
- Disappointing Ending
- Gets repetitive

Score: 8/10
